Jos Schmitt

Jos Schmitt | Chief Executive Officer

Jos has more than twenty-five years of experience in the financial services industry both internationally and in Canada, with particular expertise in the market infrastructure space, across asset classes and across geographies. Prior to joining Aequitas, Jos served as CEO of the Alpha Group of companies, including the Alpha Exchange; and as EVP Head of the Americas and Global Head of Capital Markets for a global professional services company focused on the financial services industry. During his tenure at this professional services company, he acted as strategic advisor and director of operational and/or technology programs for some of the largest market infrastructure organizations and broker-dealers around the globe. Some of his previous roles include: President and CEO of a European Derivatives Exchange and Clearing House, President and CEO of a pan-European Indices Publisher, Chairman of a Derivatives SRO, and Head of Strategy and Business Operations at a European Stock Exchange.


Annie Ropar

Annie Ropar | Chief Financial Officer

Annie is the Chief Financial Officer of Aequitas Innovations Inc. and has been with the company since its inception.  Previously, Annie was Managing Director, Global Equities at RBC Capital Markets where she was responsible for business management and strategy execution for the institutional sales and trading side of the business. During her career at RBC, she was also a Partner with RBC Capital Partners overseeing the bank’s private equity activities.  Prior to RBC, Annie spent 7 years at CIT Group Inc. as Senior Vice President and Group CFO of what was then their Structured Finance Division. Annie is a Canadian CA, CPA and also holds a U.S. CPA designation.  She serves as a director on several private company boards.  Annie started her career at Deloitte & Touche in Toronto.


Karl Ottywill

Karl Ottywill | Chief Operating Officer

Karl is an operations and technology executive with more than 25 years of experience leading transformation across information technology, infrastructure, business and product organizations. He currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer for Aequitas Innovations. Mr. Ottywill was previously Chief Operating Officer at Alpha Group and has served as Head of Technology Infrastructure, Technology Practice Lead, Technology Strategy and Delivery Lead for various financial institutions and professional services firms. A strategic thinker, his expertise has been gained through the successful delivery of high performance business and technology solutions and a proven track record in driving results focused on cost containment and revenue generation.  Mr. Ottywill is effective in building a motivated team-focused culture that thrives in challenging domains throughout the operational life cycle.


Joacim Wiklander

Joacim Wiklander | Chief Business Officer

Joacim Wiklander is Chief Business Officer, responsible for long term business strategy, sales and business development activities across all product and service offerings at Aequitas.  Joacim has extensive electronic trading experience in both the equities and derivatives markets, and was the CEO of Neonet Securities, a European agency broker who pioneered Smart Order Routing. Prior to Neonet, Joacim held several different executive positions with the Orc Group, a global provider of electronic trading technology, including Chief Strategy Officer and VP Product Management. Joacim holds a MSc in Engineering Physics and a BSc in Business Administration and Economics.


Cindy Petlock

Cindy Petlock | General Counsel & Corporate Secretary

Cindy is the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary at Aequitas. She has over 18 years of capital markets experience, focused primarily on regulatory and legal areas. Prior roles include five years as General Counsel & Corporate Secretary at CNSX Markets (the operator of the CSE), and seven years as Manager, Market Regulation at the Ontario Securities Commission. Between those roles she assisted the CEO as Special Advisor on Regulatory Projects at Market Regulation Services Inc. Cindy began her career as a compliance officer and regulatory counsel at CIBC World Markets and has been appointed to a number of committees, both domestic and international: the OSC’s Market Structure Advisory Committee, IIROC’s Market Rules Advisory Committee, CSTA’s Trading Issues Committee and IOSCO’s Standing Committee 2 (Regulation of Secondary Markets).

Susan Wolburgh Jenah
Chair of the Board and Independent Director

Susan Wolburgh Jenah is an experienced board member who currently serves on the boards of: the U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the Laurentian Bank of Canada and the Global Risk Institute.  She is a member of the C.D. Howe National Advisory Council, the TRSM Dean's Advisory Council, Ryerson University and is a McMurtry Fellow and Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School.

Ms. Wolburgh Jenah has over three decades of experience in securities and capital markets regulation and policy development.  She has held senior leadership roles throughout her career including, most recently, as founding President and CEO of IIROC (and predecessor IDA) from 2007 - 2014.  Prior to this, she was Vice-Chair of the OSC from 2004-2007 and General Counsel from 1998-2004.  She also served as the OSC's Head of International Affairs from 2001-2007, representing the Commission at various international forums and on IOSCO's standard setting Committees.

Ms. Wolburgh Jenah received a B.A. from the University of Toronto, a J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School and an ICD.D. designation from the Rotman School of Management.  She is the 2011 recipient of the Osgoode Hall Alumni Gold Key Award for Achievement and is a frequent speaker at conferences in Canada and internationally.

Bryan Thomson
Vice Chair
Senior Vice President, Equities at bcIMC

Bryan Thomson is the Senior Vice President, Equities at bcIMC overseeing a program of approximately $50 billion in publicly traded equities investing in the global markets. The group manages approximately 60% of the equities internally using index, quantitative and active strategies, with the remainder managed by external managers. All internally managed assets are traded by bcIMC's Equities trading desk. The firm is very involved in shareholder engagement, voting all proxies for investee companies and engaging with companies, policy-makers and other like-minded investors, on a range of environmental, social and, governance issues. Mr. Thomson joined bcIMC in 1997 after graduating from the University of Victoria and became the Department Head in 2002. He holds the CFA Charter and is a board member of the Pacific Pension Institute as well as the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. bcIMC is one of Canada’s largest institutional Investors managing a global investment portfolio of $120 billion. Based in Victoria, British Columbia, bcIMC invests in all major asset classes including infrastructure and other strategic investments. Their clients include public sector pension plans, public trusts, and insurance funds.

Vincent Chahley
Independent Director

Vincent Chahley is an independent businessman and corporate director who brings 30 years of experience in the investment banking and oil and gas industries to Aequitas. Mr. Chahley began his investment banking career in Toronto in 1985 with Burns Fry working in equity capital markets and moved to Calgary in 1991. He joined RBC Dominion Securities in 1995 and later became co-head of their Oil and Gas Investment Banking Group before co-founding KERN Partners in 2000. He later moved to Tristone Capital to head up their Investment Banking Group and was later in his career a Managing Director at FirstEnergy Capital. He has been a Director of several oil and gas companies and is currently Chairman of Venturion Oil Limited and on the Boards of OSUM Oilsands Corp and Velvet Energy Ltd. Mr. Chahley has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta.

Perry N. Dellelce

Perry Dellelce is a founder and managing partner of Wildeboer Dellelce LLP, one of Canada’s leading corporate finance transactional law firms.

Mr. Dellelce practises in the areas of securities, corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions, offering a unique blend of legal and corporate finance experience combined with hands on business management experience across a wide range of sectors including technology, natural resources and financial services.

Mr. Dellelce has been recognized by Lexpert as a Repeatedly Recommended lawyer and as one of Canada’s leading practitioners in the area of technology transactions in the 2012-2014 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directories.

He is extremely active in community involvement and charity, and is currently on the boards of Sunnybrook Foundation and several other charitable organizations. He is also on the board of governors at the University of Ottawa and the Business Advisory Council, Mendoza College of Business, University of Notre Dame.

Perry graduated with a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario in 1985 and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame in 1987. He subsequently obtained his law degree from the University of Ottawa in 1990 and was called to the Ontario bar in 1992.

Alan Hutton
Independent Director

Alan Hutton is a corporate director and advisor, with extensive executive and governance experience in the financial and IT sectors. He is currently Chair of the Investment Review Committee of NexGen Financial, member of the Investment Review Committee of ROI Capital, a Partner of The Transcend Strategy Group, an Advisor to Sapient Global Markets and President of Virtual Corporation. Previously, Mr. Hutton was President & CEO of several corporations including FundSERV Inc. and Star Data Systems.

Dave Lauer
Independent Director
President & Managing Partner of KOR Group

Dave Lauer is President & Managing Partner of KOR Group, a research and analysis consultancy specializing in market structure and technology. Mr. Lauer is also the co-founder and President of Healthy Markets, a non-profit coalition of financial firms that seeks to improve disclosure and transparency in the industry while advancing data-driven market structure reforms. His current work focuses on leveraging machine-learning and "big data" to help improve algorithmic order routing systems, to refine buyside execution decisions, and to generally facilitate continued enhancement of all market structure analysis. Working closely with a wide range of market participants—including institutional buyside, sellside, ATSs, exchanges, regulators and retail robo-advisors—Mr. Lauer channels his unique body of knowledge toward helping firms navigate increasingly complex modern markets. His previous work includes technology architecture at Verdande Finance and IEX Group, public advocacy at Better Markets, and electronic trading at Allston Trading and Citadel Investment Group. Mr. Lauer also helped develop technology for Tervela as an early employee during its formative stages. In his spare time, he collaborates on the maintenance and advancement of, an innovative online photo-narrative storytelling network.

Sheila Murray
Executive Vice-President, General Counsel and Secretary of CI Financial Corp.

Ms. Murray has recently been appointed President, CI Financial Corp.  She has been the Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of CI Financial since 2008.  In this position she provided strategic, securities regulatory and governance advice to the company and its Board of Directors.  Ms. Murray joined CI in 2008 after a 25-year career at Blake, Cassel’s and Graydon LLP, where she practiced securities law with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and corporate reorganizations. She has been a member of the Securities Advisory committee to the Ontario Securities Commission and was a member of the team of Blakes’ partners that advised the Canadian securities regulators on the reformulation of securities regulation and the creation of new rules and policies.  She currently teaches Securities Regulation and Corporate Finance at University of Toronto’s Global Professional LLM in Business Law Program.  Ms. Murray was a member of the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services’ Expert Stakeholder Panel on Business Law.

Bardya Ziaian
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of BBS Securities Inc.

Mr. Bardya Ziaian, founded Virtual Brokers the leading online brokerage in 2009. The company was awarded the ”Best Online Broker” by the Canadian Business Journal and the Globe and Mail. Mr. Ziaian has over 18 years of experience in the financial industry.

As a former Managing Director at Royal Capital Management, he was responsible for optimizing profits for multiple portfolios. Prior to Royal Capital Management, Mr. Ziaian spent 6 years at Belzberg Technologies as a leading software engineer. He holds both a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Mathematics from York University.

Doug Clark
Managing Director, Research of ITG Canada Corp.

Doug Clark is Managing Director, Research of ITG Canada Corp.  He is responsible for managing ITG Canada’s quantitative research group which analyzes trading performance for clients, the internal desk and ITG Canada’s suite of trading algorithms. The group is also responsible for ITG’s global index and research on ETFs and Canadian market structure.  Before joining ITG Canada, Mr. Clark was Managing Director, Equity Products at BMO Capital Markets, and before that, was Director, Sales and Trading at ITG Canada.   Mr. Clark is active in a number of industry organizations and committees, including as Chairman of the Canadian Security Traders Association, Treasurer of the Security Traders Association (STA-US), Chair of the OSC’s Market Structure Advisory Committee, Chair of the IIAC’s Equity Committee, and as a member of IIROC’s Market Regulation Advisory Committee.
